Curriculum Time

At Radipole Primary School we teach the National Curriculum. Each subject is allocated a number of sessions across a term. Not every subject is taught each half term, but all subjects are taught across a term.

 

Maths – This is taught every morning and is allocated five sessions a week. Year 1 only teach four discrete maths sessions a week.

 

Reading – In EYFS and Key Stage 1 the children are taught 20 minutes of phonics a day as well as a 20 minute reading session three times a week. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, all children are heard read in a small group three times a week. In Key Stage 2 the children have five reading sessions a week which are taught in the morning. Reading the class book is additional to the reading sessions and is often done at the end of the day. Those children in Key Stage 2 who are falling behind are heard read everyday through group reading sessions.

 

Writing – The teaching is writing includes spelling, grammar, punctuation and genre-based work. This is taught every morning and is allocated five sessions a week. Year 1 only teach four discrete Writing sessions a week.

 

Science – For most year groups, Science is taught for five out of six half terms. There are six sessions per half term which are sometimes blocked together and sometimes taught weekly depending on the year group and the topic.

 

History – For most year groups History is taught three out of six half terms. There are six sessions per half term which are sometimes blocked together and sometimes taught weekly depending on the year group and the topic. History and Geography are taught alternate half terms.

 

Geography - For most year groups Geography is taught three out of six half terms. There are six sessions per half term which are sometimes blocked together and sometimes taught weekly depending on the year group and the topic. History and Geography are taught alternate half terms.

 

Art - For most year groups Art is taught three out of six half terms. There are six sessions per half term which are sometimes blocked together and sometimes taught weekly depending on the year group and the topic. Art and Design and Technology are taught alternate half terms.

 

Design and Technology - For most year groups Design and Technology is taught three out of six half term. There are six sessions per half term which are sometimes blocked together and sometimes taught weekly depending on the year group and the topic. Art and Design and Technology are taught alternate half terms.

 

Computing – This is allocated one session per week.

 

Physical Education – This is allocated two sessions per week. Swimming is taught to all year groups in the summer term. Specialist PE teaches and coaches are used to up skill teachers.

 

PSHE – This is allocated one session per week.

 

Religious Education – This is allocated one session per week.

 

French – In Key Stage 2 French is allocated one session per week.

 

Music - For most year groups Music is taught every half terms. Singing assemblies happen every week for 20 minutes in addition to the music sessions. Each year group participates in a performance once a year which often involves singing, acting and dancing.

 

Nature Reserve – The school nature reserve is used to support other areas of the curriculum. It is used as an when it is appropriate. Forest School skills are also taught.

 

School Productions – Each year group does a production once a year. This supplements parts of the music curriculum.
